Penetration grades
Penetration measures consistency under specified test conditions. For the standard needle test, results are in tenths of a millimetre at 25°C, 100 g and 5 seconds. Confirm all limits in the applicable specification.
BUYER’S LIBRARY
Penetration, viscosity and oxidized grades describe different properties. Match the specification to the project—not just the grade name.

Penetration measures consistency under specified test conditions. For the standard needle test, results are in tenths of a millimetre at 25°C, 100 g and 5 seconds. Confirm all limits in the applicable specification.
VG grades classify viscosity at 60°C, with additional specification requirements. VG 30 is not an exact interchangeable label for 60/70. Confirm the governing standard, climate and project approval before substitution.
Air processing changes bitumen properties for selected industrial and roofing uses. Industrial oxidized grades and paving binders are not automatically interchangeable; confirm softening point, penetration and intended application.
TECHNICAL / BITUMEN
A purchasing checklist, not a certificate of conformity. Agree the test method, edition, limits and sampling requirements; confirm results on the producer’s batch COA.
| Property | Method / unit | What the buyer should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Penetration · 60/70, 80/100 | ASTM D5/D5M · 0.1 mm | Higher penetration indicates softer consistency. Common reference conditions are 25°C, 100 g and 5 s. Confirm all contractual limits, not only the grade name. |
| Viscosity grading · VG | 60°C · poise / 135°C · cSt | VG specifications evaluate absolute viscosity at 60°C and kinematic viscosity at 135°C. VG 30 is not simply another name for penetration 60/70. |
| Softening point | ASTM D36/D36M · °C | Ring-and-ball softening point is a defined test result, not a sharp melting point. Interpret it with penetration and the application standard. |
| Aging & retained properties | RTFOT / TFOT · contract method | Request the specified aging procedure and limits for residue properties. An unaged result cannot substitute for an aged-binder requirement. |
| Density & package compatibility | kg/L · stated temperature | A fixed “kg per drum” cannot be assumed for every grade or drum. Confirm net mass, internal capacity, tare, fill allowance and the packing process. |
| SDS & receiving conditions | Supplier SDS · loading approval | Hot bitumen can cause severe burns; water contact and H₂S exposure require specific controls. Confirm a compatible, dry receiving system and approved handling procedures. |
Not by grade name alone. The systems test different properties. The project engineer must accept the full specification and test results before a substitution.
Do not assume compatibility. This planner excludes generic IBCs for bitumen. Hot filling and bulk shipment need product-specific equipment, thermal allowance and supplier-approved handling.
No. VGM requires verification under the applicable approved method. Net material, packages, pallets, securing materials and container tare must all be accounted for.
